Art Bank Vault March Launch: Joseph Stokes & Tolerance Manoeuvre (Live)
March’s Vault Exhibition features the amazing stone carving and sculpture of Joseph Stokes and a performance from Tolerance Manoeuvre, as part of the Launch.
Joseph Stokes is a contemporary British artist, who exhibits internationally. Joseph graduated from The City & Guilds of London Art School in 2003 with an MA in Fine Art.
He is also a contemporary crafts-person/maker who is classically trained in figurative carving and decorative stone carving holding a Diploma in Architectural/Historical Stone Carving as well as being a trained Stone Mason. His current practice involves sculpture such as marble carving, ceramics and wood carving, alongside painting, drawing and printmaking.
Work exhibited is part of an ongoing investigation, which began 25 years ago in Athens Greece where found marble from Pendelis Mountain was used as a starting point for direct carving (improvised carving).
Neo Classical Surrealist Biomorphism.
Using traditional carving and painting processes the work explores the holistic spirit of all growth and movement on the Earth, but with a surrealist openess to it in the vein of Henri Michaux, William S Burroughs and David Lynch, motifs from the deep subconscious will arise, morphing and evolving sometimes reoccurring.
Joseph will also present some new ink works, which sometimes venture into portraiture.
Tolerance Manoeuvre
Experience the sonic glory of Tolerance Manoeuvre. With a line up of electric guitar, trumpet and three voices this London based trio aren’t your conventional band.
Taking the ‘score-based’ songwriting of Mogwai or Sigur Ros but with a jazzier and folkier start point than the former’s ‘rock approach’, Tolerance Manoeuvre create spacious sound-scapes of textured and atmospheric music that has a cinematic, story telling quality. At times the overtones of the instruments and the vocals embrace in an almost elegiac harmony. Imagine you’d been lucky enough to witness the minimal demo recordings of Talk Talk’s ‘Spirit of Eden’…primal and intimate.
